Hat Size Guide

Finding the right hat size is essential for both comfort and style. A well-fitted hat enhances your overall appearance, ensuring that it sits properly on your head without feeling too tight or too loose. This not only provides a polished look but also prevents discomfort and potential headaches caused by improper fit. Moreover, the right size ensures your hat stays secure, even in windy conditions, and maintains its shape over time. Proper fit also aids in the longevity of your hat, making it easier to care for and maintain. Using a hat case for storage helps preserve the shape and condition of your hat, protecting it from dust and damage. Investing a few moments to accurately measure your hat size, coupled with proper care and storage, will result in a more enjoyable and lasting wear, allowing you to confidently showcase your style.

FAQs

Use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the circumference of your head about 1/2 inch above your ears:

  1. Start at the center back of your head and move the tape measure towards your forehead.
  2. Wrap the tape measure snugly around the widest part of your head, which is often 1–2 fingers above your eyebrows and around to the widest part of the back of your head.
  3. Make sure the tape measure is straight and not twisted.
  4. Read the measurement on the tape measure in centimeters or inches.
  5. If you use a piece of string, hold it up against a ruler to measure its length.

If you're between sizes, it's best to choose the larger size. You can use our hat sizing chart to find your hat size

Cowboy hats should feel snug but not tight and should not move around on your head. Put your first two fingers together like a salute and place them on your browbone. Do the same at the top of your ear. Your hat should sit about 1-2 fingers above your eyebrow and 1-2 fingers above your ear. If the hat drops down over your ears or wobbles around, that means it's too big.

Some brands, like Charlie 1 Horse, Twister, and Ariat for kids, prefer to display their sizes as Small, Medium, Large, as do some women's hats and kids' hats. To find your size, start by knowing your fitted hat size as provided below:

  • Small should fit 6 ¾ and 6 ⅞”
  • Medium should fit 7” and 7 ⅛”
  • Large should fit 7 ¼” and 7 ⅜”
  • Extra Large should fit 7 ½” and 7 ⅝”
  • XXL should fit from 7 ¾”+

Other brands, like Resistol, Stetson, and Larry Mahan, tend to use the fitted size run.

Cowboy hats are a trending, fashionable, and elegant hat style with a rich historical background and a strong, confident personality. Cowboy hats feature a high, pinched crown (which makes for easy holding and wearing). Wide-brim cowboy hats are perfect for shielding the wearer’s face, head, and eyes from the elements. This trendy yet timeless headpiece dates back to the 1860s, when original vaqueros, or Mexican cowboys, wore similarly styled sombreros as they herded cattle. After some transformations and adaptations to different fabrics and designs, John B. Stetson created the style we all know and love in 1865.

The varying heights, widths, and styles of a cowboy hat can bring out the best of different face shapes. Once you’ve determined your own face shape, take a look at these tips to narrow down your search:

  • Round Faces: A cowboy hat with a slanted brim and taller crown would be a flattering option.
  • Oval-Shaped Faces: Good news! Just about any type of cowboy hat fits your shape.
  • Oblong Faces: A western hat with a medium-height crown can bring balance and elegance to your appearance.
  • Square Faces: Cowboy hats with round crowns and curved brims (and with minimal angles) should fit you best.
  • Heart-Shaped Faces: Look for a teardrop-shaped crown and shorter brim in your new western hat.

Steam is the easiest DIY fix. Just bring a pot of water to boil, and hold the hat over the steam plume, gently shaping it back to the shape you want. You can do this a handful of times without having to take it to a professional.

A great cowboy hat is an investment for any cowboy or cowgirl. A quality Western hat can last you years—decades even—if properly stored and cared for. Use a hat case or box to keep it in shape, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, and always handle it by the brim, not the crown. Felt Cowboy Hat

After each wear, use a clean soft-bristled brush or soft cloth to remove dirt and debris. If it is wet, allow it to air dry. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight, ideally on a hat rack or in a hat box.

Straw Cowboy Hat

Similar to felt cowboy hat care, you can use a damp cloth or soft brush to wash stains and dirt out of a straw cowboy hat. If your hat has a heavier, stubborn stain, apply mild dish detergent to help remove it.
